Just finished watching and it was HEAVILY edited. TCM normally doesn't edit and/or cut a film, no matter the film's original rating--in this case, The Super Cops was rated R.

The only other instance I can think of when TCM did this was with its premiere of The Outfit (1973) with Robert Duvall.

Additionally, the late, late showings on TCM are often the movies with saltier language, nudity, and violence.

I was disappointed in TCM's presentation this morning.

i haven't gotten to it yet-was it the TV version? as i recall reading they shot two versions, one rated R for theatrical release and a cleaner version for TV. wonder if they showed the latter.

reply

Once again, TCM showed the PG version, even though it was in the late night Underground time slot. I really don't know why they bother. Pat Hingle saying "Not if I was hung by my ears..." just doesn't have the same ring as "Not if I was hung by my prick..."

It's on TCM Right now, and definitely the Salty Version.

Dang TCM messed up my DVR by leading in with a long promo, so the end got cut off. Do you mind telling me how it ends?

Leibman did the ride along with the criminal brothers, ended up shooting them when they saw his wire. Other cops tried to pull a sting in a diner by offering our guys a bribe. They got out of that by accusing the undercover cops of entrapment, etc. Then what? Couldn't have been too much movie left after that.

Same thing happened to me too. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for another replay of it because I love gritty 70's movies about NYC. This one has the added bonus of a good dose of humor and directed by the immortal Gordon Parks.

'Cause I'm Black you think I did it?

They became detectives third class and got chewed out again by the Commissioner. He then assigned them to their new Captain, Randolph, who was the Lieutenant they beat up earlier. Then that's it.

There was never any follow up movie[s]since i guess this didn't do too good at the box office?... whatever happened to these two, were they recognized more for their work did they become higher grade detectives, did that black captain ream them a new one... did they make it to retirement?

The movies based on a book that was published a few years before this movie. It had since added addendum's when it's been republished. The information I have is from this blogger who has read the book and it's updates. Rob Leibman's Greenberg left the force a few years before the film. He's gotten into trouble with insurance fraud and sentenced to prison in 1990. David Selby's Hanz resigned in 1975 when he was in possession of marijuana cigarettes on a vacation.

Too bad they ended up being shady... i got that impression from just their Police Academy antics and I guess rules were A LOT looser in the late 60's [?] when they went thru the academy.
I hope they never took any pay outs from drug sellers that would have made them real scum.

I wonder what they've done since; did Greenberg get out of jail? Did either collect that pension?... How old are they now and what are they up to.

There is always life after The Job; but it feels better to do it well.
