travolta is right about the ending

in swordfish, he says to hugh jackman ' u seen the sugarland express' then yada yada, then he goes 'i didn't like the ending'.

after watching the film, the ending, although it may be true, doesn't seem to fit in the pace and nature of the rest of the film. if spielberg had directed this now, im sure he would've changed the ending cause it's just so abrupt, more abrupt than WOTW. what do u guys think

reply

I think it fits with the realism of the story- while there is a fair amount of stretching things for dramatic effect with the film, sometimes for laughs, it works for me.

I think when Travolta said it he ment that he didn't like the ending because the Anti heroes - The outlaws like himself didn't win. (Remember him talk in the begining of the film about moral that the bad guy is got to go down.) But as far as I think "The sugarland express" is a good example of great cinema and one of the best of the 70's though I wanted to see a happy ending for the story of this poor couple.

"Abrupt" is a perfect adjective to describe the ending of this film, but it worked for me.

SPOILER Alert

Uhm.... true story guys.

sorry it cant be sugarcoated up up up in "SugarLand'

I get so frustrated reading all these posts from people who dont know any more about this wonderful film & the amazing true story thats its based on.

NO, they werent gonna give Lou jean her baby back,ANYWAY the methodists were adopting baby Langston for good.

No, it cant have a happy up ending, this is what happens in Texas Goddamnit!

Uhh.... people have been so DUMBED DOWN cinematically during the last 20 yrs that everything has got to be sugarcoated , Tarantino-esque soundtrack blaring, the critics review all but tells you the ending , plus tons of car chases & physical Impossibilities to the stories so it looks all cutesy wutesy & will sell good @ Blockbuster tonite.

Jeez. Dumbed down to the nth degree.

ON MY LAST NeRVE.

SugarLand Express is a GREAT movie. Spielborgo as they call him on "The Simpsons" got to do "Jaws' based on the strength of this film.

If I remember correctly, Travolta also rails against the ending of Dog Day Afternoon, another, er, true story

You are SO right it hurts.

It's the George W. Bush-ing of America ... "he he he he"

When everything went to sh*t at the end of the movie I thought to myself, "Thank goodness." Regardless if it was accurate to the events it portrayed, a wall had to be hit eventually and the timing and tone St.Sp. invoked worked beautifully.

An understated classic.

Jesus, you can't even go to a movie forum without someone injecting their political beliefs. (rolling eyes) and it's a movie that had nothing to do with politics! Hellfield, shut the hell up.

"I so agree. Don't bring the President into this just because you are a fu*king democrat. Shut the Fu*k up."

Why not? You moronic conservatives bring up Obama for no reason in all the OTHER topic discussions whenever it suits YOUR purposes. Plus I do believe that the intention was humorous - something you lack. And stop swearing, will ya - I know you have NO manners at all but it at least PRETEND to be civilized.

reply

exactly---if anything, people are so used to everything being "disney-ized" (not sure what Bush had to do with it other than a political jab from some idiot). disney destroted the story of Wicked when they made a "happy-ending" musical out of it.

didnt it say at the end that lou jean DID get her baby back after serving her prison sentence? Is that what happened in real life to Ila Fae?

reply

I think the ending is the best part of what is an otherwise boring movie.

I just watched this movie and I was soooooo glad with the ending. I was hoping for an ending like that. It was excruciating!!! I so love it when the "heroes/anti-heroes", who are criminals or who flagrantly break the law and endanger others, get it in the end. Of the times I suppose.
Good directing, if not ham-fisted at times. Good acting. Nauseatingly sappy script at times. The cops could have been a little more inept, and the locals could have been a little dumber.
