There is a harmonica song played throughout that is almost identical to "The 12 Days of Xmas".

That's the exact thing I thought of.

Oh my God, I know! That's all I kept singing the entire time!

The first time I heard it, I thought, "What is that? I know that song. It's the 12 frickin' days of Christmas!" Then I kept thinking, was it some sly reference to something in the scene I just watched? Was there a partridge in the corner that I hadn't noticed or something?

HARUMPH!

I thought the same thing. So I picked up my Hohner Bb harmonica and I played the theme myself. And sure enough, the one note where the theme starts to differ from "The 12 Days of Christmas" is a note that you can't play on a blues harmonica (without some serious note bending).

My guess is that John Williams knocked this one out quickly, not realizing that he was writing music for a genius like Spielberg. Of course his next collaboration with Spielberg, for Jaws, was brilliant and iconic. (Dum dum. Dum dum. Dum dum dum dum dum dum etc.)

Fully agreed. I was thinking the same thing.
