Does anyone know where I can get an UNCUT version on DVD?

G'day you blokes,

I have had three or four different versions of "Stone" since 1974, when I first saw it at the old Chullora Twin Drive-in cinema in Sydney.

The first was on Beta tape, and it was cut to pieces. The second I recorded ex SBS when it was first released for TV in about 1982 or 3, and it was the edited version that I already had.

The third version was one I purchased on VHS some years later, once again hoping for the FULL version, but once again, I was disappointed.

Finally, I bought it on DVD some years back, and apart from a slight increase in picture quality, it was no different to the other taped versions.......

So, I repeat my original question.....does anyone know where I can get an UNCUT version, which was the one which was screened at the cinemas?

Allow me elaborate a bit.

All the versions I refer to are suffering these losses:

* At the funeral of Go-down, each of the main members of the Grave Diggers offer an item to be put in with the body of their mate. Septic offers up a couple of Phantom comics, Stinkfinger tosses in a pair of ladies knickers, that he says he took off a sheila last night in Kings Cross, and Zonk tosses in a bag of hi-quality heads, with a comment that Go-down might want a toke. In the tape and DVD versions, all you see is just Toad aplogising and tossing in his jewelled goblet.

* One of the early scenes that is also missing is where Stone is working on his Norton motorcycle, and scratching his head as he tries to work out how to go about it, as he reads from a service manual. As the shot gets tighter, we see why he is having trouble....he's using a SUZUKI service manual. That one is one that will stay in my memory for ever. LOL.

* Again, in another missing scene early in the movie, Stone is called into Inspector Hannigan's office, and told that he must try and infiltrate the Grave Diggers gang to find out who is bumping them off. When he tells Hannigan that he doesn't think that it would be such a good idea, Hannigan tells him that if he refuses, he'll have to get a haircut, and will find himself back on the street, pounding a beat. This sets up the scene for Stone to (unwillingly) take the job in the first place.

* After Stone takes delivery of his new Kwakka 900, which is obviously the envy of all the other Gravies, he takes Toad's sheila Tart for a ride, against Toad's wishes! This is why Toad gives Stone a hard time later in the movie and why they get into the blue over Tart.

There are some other cuts that I can't think of at the moment, but it sure would be good to have this Oz classic in its complete form......

I was hoping that the 25th anniversary might have goaded the DVD producers into releasing such a version, but it was not to be, it seems.

So, if you have a copy on DVD that contains these aforementioned scenes, please let me know where you got it from, and I'll order it today!!!!

I also like the name of the production company....Hedon Productions. It's probably just a play on words, between "head-on" as in a crash, and "hedon" as in hedonist....one who believes that the persuit of pleasure is the chief goal in life.

Many thanks to all.

TAKE THE TRIP.

Hi cptcatastrophy and everyone,

Just thought I'de add a post re the uncut version of "Stone".

I received the DVD released by Severin today, and apart from the fact that it comes in a 2-disc set with a new-look cover, it is STILL THE SAME OLD CUT VERSION.

What a bloody disappointment.....again!

Oh well, thet say that there's one born every minute.

So I re-ask my original question:

"Does anyone know where I can get an UNCUT version of "Stone"???

there is no uncut version! I remember seeing an interview with the director a few years ago saying they originally took a version to the cinemas to see how it would go then based on some of the responses cuts were made and then stone was released to the public ! what you see now on dvd is the directors cut!

reply

Hi fitzysbuna,

Well, there you go.

That's why I'm having trouble finding it then...

(Gives a whole new meaning to "director's CUT" doesn't it?!)

At least your news will save me from making any more hopeful purchases, only to be disappointed again.

Many thanks for your input.

Damn...bummer!
I own a copy of the ex rental but it comes from the uk so I doubt it's the version you're after.

gday. unfortunately the only way you will find those scenes is to track down an original 35mm theatrical print... if one still exists. they may have have destroyed all the original ones, but i believe a version still exists somewhere as if you watch the Stone Forever doco they show the panty sniffing scene in that.

and if you do happen to find, send me a copy hahhaha! ive been trying to find it myself

reply

According to the NFSA website, 35mm prints of the film are in their preservation collection (cannot be borrowed). So it appears to exist. But if the director does not give permission for the original cut to be released, then it will just remain unseen.

I haven't seen this film in years, it would have been 82 i think. Check this link out.

Hopefully this is the uncut version.

Hi scottyni,

Thanks for your reply, and the link.

This is the most-recently purchased Severin version which I sourced from the US several weeks ago, and apart from the new packaging and second disc, is STILL the same, chopped-up version that I already have.

I think an earlier poster was correct, when he stated that an uncut version no longer exists.....

Bugger it.... : (
