Mike and Danielle moment

Can anyone tell me just what's happening backstage there at the moment Jim's playing "Americana Stray Cat Blues?" I'm pretty sure Danielle is saying that Mike finds Jim attractive at first ("Is he not...beautiful? You can tell me."), but then she says something incomprehensible, and Mike responds with 'Look, if you'd known him as long as I have..." What's that about? Is he saying that Jim's straight or does it have something to do with performing? I can't make it out.

Yeah, I've always wondered this myself. I think its definitely open to interpretation. It would appear that Danielle may be implying that Mike does indeed find Jim attractive in a sexual way. However, Mike's response seems to deflect it more towards the fact that they'd known each other for years and that making money by performing in the music business was the primary important aspect of their relationship. Danielle's insinuation could also mean that Jim only appears to be 'beautiful' (to Mike) when he is making money for them by performing on stage (??).

It's an interesting question, isn't it? Some people have suggested that if Mike did have feelings for Jim, it would have to have been hidden at that time. On the other hand, others said it was mainly just a reason to throw in a Brian Epstein reference! It's interesting in any case.

It certainly is an interesting question. I think to tie-in with the fact that Maclaine's story was loosely based on John Lennon there's a possibility the producers/writer attempted to depict an Epstein reference through this scene. When I view it now I see it as Danielle displaying a tongue in cheek quip at Mike and she was mainly insinuating that Jim is only really 'beautiful' to him when he's performing and earning them a crust. I think the writer had purposely left the scene open-ended which does give it a little more intrigue and tension. But now I remember, Mike had tried to convince Danielle around this time (a scene in the limousine) that the money aspect wasn't important to him, but she didn't really believe him, therefore I think the scene is an expansion on Mike and Danielle's differences especially when viewing Jim as a 'meal ticket'.

That's a REALLY interesting interpretation...and seems like the most reasonable explanation for the scene.

Thank you! It's good to read people's interpretations of such scenes.
