Is that actually true that Romero had shot some footage for the american release of this movie?

Yes.

is that footage on the US dvd release

you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid

Sadly, yes. And in an interview on the european dvd, Umberto Lenzi said that he would have never did such thing to any director, considering this act as a strong lack of respect since Romero never called him to ask if he could do it.
