While watching this I had the distinct impression Dan Curtis was trying to recreate the atmosphere of the second Carl Kolchak telemovie THE NIGHT STRANGLER which he also directed. The whole setup with the police investigation, the presence of Jo Ann Pflug who was in both films and Robert Cobert also scoring both movies. One other thing - does it really get that foggy in California?

No, they were using fog machines... and overdid it a little because they were trying to recreate the damp, foggy British moors of the original story by David Case, just transplanted to the coastal Los Angeles region.
