Then I discover on imdb that this movie exists. Why was it omitted from the boxset? Also, are there any other PP movies omitted from that box set (not counting the Steve Martin ones)?

even though United Artists Owns the Copyright, for some inexplicable reason, they don't have distribution(except for theatrical), material or publicity rights and whoever does is a real ass.
therefore, they were unable to get the rights to include "return" not only in box sets, but in Pink panther compilation books as well.

I got the boxset for my Dad's birthday as we used to watch them when I was little and we used to be in fits of laughter. I was gutted when I found out that this film was not in the boxset as it is my favourite of the films. My second favourite has to be a 'Shot in the Dark'.
Oh well, this film is available on it's own so will have to buy it seperately.
Universal owns it I think.
Looks like three of the films in the series are missing from that box set.

The film was done by ITC, not United Artists. Edwards went back to them afterwards, to continue the series (after it was a hit). That is why it isn't in the set; MGM didn't own the rights. Also not included is Inspector Clouseau, starring Alan Arkin. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a classic, either. Technically, A Shot in the Dark isn't a Pink Panther film, in that it was adapted from a stage play, which does not feature Clouseau. The character is shoehorned into it (as is Cato, who debuts here).
Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!
CURSE of the Pink Panther (1983),and SON of the Pink Panther (1993) were also not included.
