Initially, Max tries to hide Lucia, even denying her presence, but they quickly find themselves trapped in the apartment. Their predicament, however, makes sense within the theme of the film, for the characters have always been trapped by their past, by their guilt (he as a murderer, she as a survivor) and also by their love. They really have nowhere to go except back into their past, so they effectively recreate the concentration camp, including the near-starvation. When they do break out, they are still reliving their past as Max dons his SS uniform and Lucia dresses as his little girl.

Sorry it's so late replying to this thread but I've just seen the film. I also thought them staying locked in the apartment didn't make much sense, that they should have fleed the country. however I found your explanation pretty good, miff62.

I found Max a bit different, he was very weak to had been in the position he was once in. I thought he would run away with her, because there were to many people who could easily find out about her. The most important one being her husband, then his partners, who would stop at nothing to hide there involvement. You would have thought he knew it would not last. But he became not just locked in the past but even feeling no one could touch them, it proved to be a bad idea as they turned on him.
