a brit weighs in

doing his best yank accent

'we love your monty python and eddie izzard'

Kidding aside, may of us brits love mp, but don't actually get why you Americans seem to be obsessed and in love with it. It seems a different style of humour. not that you're too stupid to get it, or can't appreciate it, just that traditionally our senses of humour ( as seen in sitcoms and the ilk) are so different, like the fact that you love benny hill and are you being served (or used to anyway). Personally I'm not that keen on some American huomour, not that I don't think its funny, it's dumb,or that I don't get it, I just don't care for it.

however I do love family guy, and the simpsons, and i'm mad on Frasier, which btw is genuinely intelligent and thoughtful. I know family guy is crass and dumb, but it's supposed to be, it's its sense of humour, not stupid writings that makes it so. Plus it has an o.t.t un-pc appeal that our country is far too cowardly and weak willed to risk attempting, even if it does stereotype us brits as buck teethed ridiculous accented homosexuals.

anyway that's my pennies worth

I think many on here think of python fans of arrogant, because the stereotype of us Brits is one of arrogance. Which may be true, but is kinda ironic considering the stereotype of americans by brits is also one of arrogance!
And before you jump down my throat as a yank hater, it's something you yourself's acknowledge and spoof, in things like the simpsons, when homer calls the U.S 'everyone's favourite country', or that fact that you call your army the 'world police'

I've always loved British comedy, and I've spent some time analyzing exactly why I enjoy it so much. Here's my personal explanation, and I think it applies to a lot of American fans:

Americans tend to see the British as steadfast, serious, and highly concerned with preserving their dignity. I believe this has been particularly true since WWII, when the British population's 'stiff upper lip' was truly displayed to the world.

So when Americans see Brits acting childish (Benny Hill), bizarre (Monty Python), or apoplectic (Basil Fawlty going off), it strikes us as especially funny, because it's not what we're expecting.

And you can bloody well KEEP Eddie Izzard.

- What are you gonna do, when the world catches on?

Fair enough. I'm not sure we are that obsessed with dignity mind. Bearing in mind a fair bit of our comedy is slapstick. Plus you only have to watch shows like Britain's got talent, to see that our dignity went out of the window a long time ago. Of course the humour of python is based on the upper class twitishnesh of brits, and this is reflected in the world's attitude to us, what with it being so popular

Brits do love to laugh mind. That's why we produce sitcoms. Just like you Americans do. We both tend to follow formulaic wats of writing them though.

I often wonder what Americans make of our society, depicted in films like scum, harry brown, the full monty and the ilk, and how this contrasts with their image of us as a wimpy bunch
