Movies that you consider to be funnier than Holy Grail

The Big Lebowski
The Hangover
The Naked Gun
Anchorman
Dumb & Dumber
Life of Brian
Idiocracy
Borat
Evil Dead II

Non-comedies:
Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Inglourious Basterds

A Fish Called Wanda is the funniest movie I have ever seen. Appropriately, John Cleese starred and has a writing credit in both.

Going station to station is hunky dory but if the trip's low on creeps it can drive Alladin Sane.

reply

Murder By Death
Ed Wood
Blazing Saddles
Dr. Strangelove
MST- The movie
Roger and Me

reply

There is only one movie funnier than this one, and that's only because it is the funniest movie ever made: Blazing Saddles.

reply

The Big Lebowski
The Naked Gun
Dumb & Dumber
Life of Brian

Those are the only movies that even come close

The rest are utter garbage

withnail & I

Life of Brian and Airplane.

Blazing Saddles I would put on a par with this- both are truly magnificent in their on way, but i couldn't seperate the two.

Zoolander is funny, it isn't no Holy Grail, but it's good. And you're going to call out Zoolander, but say nothing about Black Dynamite: the movie that only made for a good fake trailer?

reply

The Meaning of Life

reply

Agreed, though holy grail is my favorite because I'm also a total sucker for arthurian legend.

"is this dangerous?"
"not clinically."

reply

None! This is IMO the funniest movie ever made. The only comedy I've given 10/10.

Annie Hall

reply

None.

The funniest comedies that come after it on my list would be:

DR.STRANGELOVE
LOCAL HERO
RAISING ARIZONA

Withnail & I as well....

Marlon, Claudia and Dimby the cats 1989-2005, 2007 and 2010.

I'll put in a word for American satire - Drop Dead Gorgeous written by Simpsons writer Lona Williams which flies over an awful lot of heads.

And Night at The Opera, whose slapstick has never been topped, even by the Pythons.

reply

To Be or Not To Be (the original version).

Night of the Hunter was a pretty good satire too.

I tried a couple of Marx Bros recently but couldn't find what I'd thought so funny when I were a lad. Pity that.

Drop Dead Gorgeous is hilarious! When I saw that at a theater, I had no idea what to expect. Actually, seeing it was a last minute decision because the film I wanted to see had already started like 10 or 15 minutes earlier. This is one hilarious movie - my belly hurt from laughing so hard!

Brazil. Office Space. This is Spinal Tap. Waiting for Guffman. etc.

reply

The only movie that is even close to this one is Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000.

People have no sense.

A Fish Called Wanda is nice in the 1980s atmosphere and music, and it has some funny bits, but as a whole, it's not even 8% as funny as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. There are lots of boring bits, lots of exposure, storytelling, 'cringy situations' that are not funny per se, and often you have to wait for the joke for a long time. MPatHG just keeps shooting joke after joke at you at a rapid pace, how can you even compare?

Office Space is more poignant than funny, more surreal than humorous, more sad than fun, more realistic than wacky, etc. It's a great movie, but not a good comedy. It's basically more disturbing than funny, and even the humor is more 'oh, I see'-type internalized reaction than something that makes you laugh.

Murder by Death is fun, but its humor is too weird and quirky to make you laugh as much as this more relatable and intelligent humor does.

People actually respect these modern turds like 'Hangover' enough to even watch them, let alone compare them to something that's an actually funny movie? What times we live in..
