Funny Pauline Kael bash of this movie

"In McQ [Wayne] imitates his juniors; he lifts his name from Steve McQueen and his tough police officer character from Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry Callahan. Incompetence like this prostrates me; I got so stoned by the boringness I forgot to get up and go home."

reply

Funny that she accuses Wayne of imitating actors who had been imitating him for years.

I wouldn't say that Eastwood or McQueen imitated Wayne ... at all.

Of course, Wayne wasn't really imitating them in McQ so much as jumping into a genre that they had rendered credible and popular.

reply

Wayne had realized, far too late, that he'd made a huge mistake when he passed on the Harry Callahan role. Of course, it's unlikely that Dirty Harry would have been the success it was with Wayne in the lead role, either.

None of those guys could be considered a 'good' actor but, of the three, Wayne was easily the worst.

reply

Wayne would had been too old to play Dirty Harry and would not had the attitude that Eastwood bought.

Its that man again!!

I don't believe Pauline Kael ever gave a John Wayne movie a good review
Or any of the critics of the time for that matter

You don't have to stand tall, but you do have to stand up!

reply

Not surprising since John Wayne wasn't much of an actor. I'd list his performances as either bad, or really bad. I can't say I've ever really understood how he maintained his popularity over such a long period of time but, then, it was a completely different United States back then, too. I guess he just happened to be at the right place at the right time. It's worth noting that he began slipping in the latter half of the anti-establishment sixties.

reply

Hah hah! You're a funny boy! Still battling a guy who's been dead for over 35 years.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Does bad acting have an expiration date?

reply

What makes it 'bad'? You only using the 'B' movies or his 'just getting a paycheck' movies? Or do you want to to draw you a picture? Spell it out?

Answering an interrogative with what appear to be four more interrogatives (it's hard to tell since they're so poorly constructed) is the caliber of reply that, alone, would seem to be enough to corroborate the original assertion.

But thanks for playing.

“I’ll tell you this. He was a hell of a finer actor than he was given credit for being while he was alive." -- Dennis Hopper on John Wayne

John Wayne was easily the equal of both McQueen and Eastwood as an actor, with charisma and screen presence to spare. Otherwise he wouldn't remain one of the most popular and successful screen actors of all time to this day.
