This is a good movie!

I agree. Saw McQ in the theaters in 1974 when it came and enjoyed it then and still enjoy watching it now. Critics seem to like bashing John Wayne, but how many stars are out there today that have that "star presence." Not many that I can think of. Solid entertainment from a solid actor.

I agree. I just watched this for the first time and it was a lot better than I expected. Though with all respect to the Duke he was at least 10 - 15 years too old for this role but gives it his best. I live in the Seattle area so its interesting to see what the area looked like 35 years ago. I recognized that hospital as the Amazon's HQ, funny.

No, it's a great movie. Loved it.

Wasn't expecting much because I didn't John Wayne's cowboy/military hero persona would fit in a 1970's era movie. I was expecting The Duke to look out of place in 1974 as an old fashioned relic from a bygone era. Boy were my preconceived notions proved wrong. He handles the part right for that time and era. I didn't think he could change with the times considering how the 1970's was a night and day difference of culture from when people think of John Wayne. This just goes to show how good of an actor John Wayne was. This has to rank up there as one of the better crime drama films of the 1970's. Excellent film with surprising twists and turns. This film holds up very well over time.

I finally watched McQ last month, and it was better than I'd always expected. The biggest problem I had with it was anytime Diana Muldaur's character made a "speech" about how tough it is to be a cop (and the chief of police misusing the word "inferring"), but the opening with the cops being shot and the reveal of the shooter especially grabbed my attention.

Yes, there isn't really anything particularly wrong with it, even though it does strongly remind of both Bullitt and Dirty Harry - but then again a lot of crime movies of the time were more or less like that, had a similar feel to them. Fortunately, I've got a soft spot for these late 1960's/early 1970's urban crime yarns; dig the style and the vibes. John Wayne, however, looks kind of lost and out of place in the modern cityscape and comes off strangely wooden in an environment that would require a more relaxed, naturalistic presence. As someone elsewhere wrote, he doesn't really seem to connect with the moral ambiguity underspinning the storyline.
