Why was Boyle shot??(spoilers)

Spoiler

Why was Boyle, John Wayne's partner--KILLED ? He appearedto be in cooperation with that guy who shot him--he had given him that satchel with the gun and possibly drugs. Why did the guy take the satchel--then shoot him for?? Just to "cut him out" of the payoff??

That's the way I took it.

But was his wife in on it?

It's been a year since I last saw the film, but my recollection is that she's not dirty, only her husband. She used to have the hots for McQ however and now hubby's gone she's ready to make her move.

My take is that she was going to use anyone to reach her financial goals. She was having an affair with the cop that killed her husband and would have had one with McQ in order to get that money. Probably would have killed them both in order to keep the money for herself. If she could plot to kill her husband than the other killings probably wouldn't matter.

SPOILERS below..................................

Here's my take on what happened...Toms and Boyle were the ringleaders of the plan to switch the confiscated drugs with sugar, and the two cops killed at the beginning were used for the purposes detailed later in the film. Once they served their purpose, Toms most likely convinced Boyle to eliminate them not only to cover their tracks, but also to avoid having to split any of the future drug money sale proceeds with them.

Now unbeknownst to Boyle, Toms was having an affair with Boyle's wife, who later admitted to being estranged with her husband to Wayne's character. After Boyle knocked off the two dirty cops, Toms knocked Boyle off not only to further reduce the eventual overall split, but to also avoid any messy confrontation that would eventually arise when Boyle learned about his wife's affair with Toms. With Boyle and the two other accomplices out of the way, Toms basically had everything to himself, the money, Tom's wife, and not a lot of extraneous links to the crime.
