I don't hate the film, but I dislike the overall premise of Scaramanga's big "master plan."
He wants to sell solar energy to the highest bidder. Big deal. That is 100% legal!
Outside of killing a few minor character bad-guys along the way, he wasn't as diabolical as they should have made him out to be.
So his mistress was a 'bad guy'?
His speech about his first kill showed just how twisted he was.
Well, at first glance you don't think of her as a bad guy. But then again, she was the lover of an assassin, and she clearly knows what he did for a living. Guilty by association, at least. Plus, she turned on him, and you know what happens to snitches...
shareThe Solex was just a McGuffin. The main plot of this film is setting up the duel between Bond and Scaramanga. The Solex just gave us a two hour film and a means of getting to the final mano e mano duel on Scaramanga's island.
shareMaybe it's because the middle of this movie is quite simply too goofy as opposed to the beginning 10 mins and the last ca 30 mins which are simply brilliant.... (yes ask me to elAborate) ....
The biggest problem with 007 movies is that they are taken too seriously by (some of) the viewing public. The creators clearly made these movies as full blown comedies with bits of "serious" material included. This does NOT work and confuses those ppl I think.
There was a noticeable change in tone for Bond films beginning with "Diamonds Are Forever": the introduction of more humour, less espionage and Bond becoming something of a comedic caricature of his own popularity. I think all of this piqued with "Man with the Golden Gun" so it gets the blame. I still enjoy the film - I believe it was the first Bond film I ever saw on TV as a kid - but do recognize the issues, however the franchise was effectively dead and lost two films earlier even with Connery's final performance. Moore became the somewhat loveable but pompous and comedic Bond who was simply an agent rather than a cold war era spy. Like all Bond films starting with "Diamonds", the intro and ending are fairly tight whereas the middle is nothing more than popcorn entertainment filler of comedy and stunts. If that was the formula of Bond films then MWTGG delivered brilliantly!
shareTied for my favorite Bond film with Spy Who Loved Me. Sheriff Pepper is hillarious except for the profanity. I could jerk off to Britt Ekland in a bikini all day long. Scaramanga is a great villain. Nick Nack was great. Roger Moore was never better and the theme song was great.
shareYeah the Moore films became fluffy self-parodies, but "TMWTGG" is far from the worst of them ("Moonraker" is the worst). This movie at least has a fast pace and Christopher Lee being his bad self, and has too many bad jokes but at least knows when to stop.
Did you know that Lee was Ian Fleming's cousin, and was a secret agent during WWII, and as such may have served as part of the inspiration for the Bond character? That sort of trivia makes me forgive this movie a lot.
