RIP to Theodora Van Runkle

She designed the costumes - that and Bea Arthur's performance - are the only things bearable about this movie....No. To be fair, I did like this movie until I saw the Roz Russell version.

Read (or saw on tv) recently that Lucy said she disliked the costumes she wore in the film and found them uncomfortable. She looked great in some of them but I would imagine that hours spent under under hot lights etc would sap anyones energy levels - regardless of what you are wearing (and some of the costumes did look very heavy).

Ye gods - had no idea Van Runkle was 83! The NY Times obit makes no mention of MAME.

I always though her MAME costumes were splendid, but one can see Lucille Ball's point: the red lounging pajamas she wears in the "It's Today" sequence look like they weigh a ton.

I have to watch it again with older eyes. It's been a long time.

I thought both Mame films were excellent and unique in their own way. The burgundy Van Runkle gown that Mame wore when entertaining the Upsons was absolutely stunning. One of the most beautiful gowns I've ever seen on the silver screen.

That white shoulder padded suit Lucy wore in the "Bossom Buddy" number was just awful looking. And the outfit Bea Arthur wore was just as ugly. In fact, I don't think Bea had one decent looking outfit in the whole movie.
