Nate Scarboro

I cannot understand this character. What was his athletic career before he went into prison? I didn't understand his brief bio.

reply

I don't recall what he did to get incarcerated, but his stay was lengthened when he hit Warden Hazen before he was Warden... at least, this is the best of my recollection from seeing it SO many times - I could have gotten something a little messed up :)

reply

No, it was Pop that hit Hazen before he made Warden.

reply

They can't tell you what the prisoners did to be incarcerated because you're supposed to root for them. Who's going to root for a bunch of murdering rapists?

Nate, though, I don't think did anything all that horrible. I like to think he just slugged the wrong guy. Like Pop.

What are you talking about? In the movie when he comes in the game the announcer says "there's a figure that graced the Polo Grounds for years".

reply

*beep* ...athletes go to jail all the damn time now...this movie was before its time

reply

He played for the Giants, because that's how Paul recognized him. But he must have done something pretty bad, because he'd been in there for 14 years, according to what he says in the whole "keep your balls" speech.

Here's to the health of Cardinal Puff.

They did say Shokner killed five people outside of prison and two more inside prison. My sense though wasn't serial killer or spree killer but something like a hitman. Still a murderer but comes off looking more bad-ass.

reply

He was a guard when he played for the Giants. Look at where he lines up when he gets in the game. Also adds credence to his line, "After all these years . . . my first touchdown!"

reply

Exactly kcl71 an all pro tight end would've certainly had scored a TD during his career.

reply

Not in the 50s. Tight ends were blockers. Mike Ditka (drafted '61) was the prototype receiving tight end.
