Top-6 sports movies of all-time

Good sports movies are difficult to make, but the original version of The Longest Yard (I won't even watch the remake- it's a disgrace they made it at all) is easily among the 6 greatest sports movies ever (was going to make a top-5 but who can choose between Caddyshack and Slap Shot?).

Here's my top-5 (in no particular order):

1. The Longest Yard
2. Hoosiers
3. Rocky
4. Slap Shot
5. The Natural
6. Caddyshack

Which ones make your list?

reply

Just my preferences:

1. Hoosiers
2. Breaking Away
3. A League of Their Own
4. Chariots of Fire
5. Bull Durham
6. Rocky
7. Raging Bull
8. Pride of the Yankees
9. Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
10. Remember the Titans
11. Friday Night Lights

excellent lists...
I agree with those.

I really liked the original version.. but as far as remakes goes....
the remake is not too bad.

Burt Reynolds does a great job in the original..

I agree with your list, in essence, but would add:

Rudy

The Pride of the Yankees

Eight Men Out

Field of Dreams

I know the last two are almost always on every list of sports movies, but that doesn't mean they aren't fantastic movies! The first two never fail to bring tears to my eyes!

reply

I make my list based on if I cheer or cry at the end.

Top Sports Cheer List movies (somewhat in order):
Hoosiers
Rocky II
Rudy
Caddyshack
The Fighter
Breaking Away
The Greatest Game Ever Played
One On One
Invincible
Glory Road
The Longest Yard
Miracle
Seabiscuit
A Knight's Tale

Top Sports Cry List movies (somewhat in order):
Running Brave
Field Of Dreams
Ice Castles
Six Pack
One In A Million: The Ron LeFlore Story
Rocky
Bull Durham
The Rookie

Let me know if I have any glaring omissions (or if you thought any on my list should be destroyed they were so bad).

reply

1. Bad News Bears
2. Hoosiers
3. Rocky
4. Rudy
5. The Blood of Heroes
6. Hoop Dreams
7. Breaking Away
8. The Sandlot
9. The Natural

All of those got a 9/10 or better from me.

I would also add, "North Dallas Forty", with Nick Nolte and Mac Davis...

Awesome movie.

Here's to those who wish me well...

reply

'N Dallas 40' is waaaaayyy ahead of 'Caddyshack'. I'd really not think of 'Caddyshack' as a sports film.

Carpe Noctem!

What do you mean? Caddyshack covered a lot of sports:

Golf
Synchronized Swimming
Night Golf
Diving
Boat Ramming

And of course....

Gopher Hunting!
