Why does that guy record those couple of lines from the warden?

If you watch the scene where Crewe first meets the warden, that little silent dude with glasses is sitting there with a tape recorder. He presses record when the warden says, "The game embodies what has made this country great. It's a great game, played by great men." And then presses stop to stop the recording right after that.

WTF was that about? WTH is he recording those two lines for? That was completely bizarre.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

I dunno. Maybe it has something to do with Watergate and Nixon taping conversations in the Oval Office?

One of his main jobs was to record the "profound thoughts" or aphorisms of the warden. The warden's ego made him think of himself as a great man, and he wanted his "wisdom" recorded for his-to-ry. If you watch, you'll see the warden signal that he is about to utter something important, to be recorded. Having a sycophantic secretary follow him around with a recorder is just one of the indicators of the warden's sense of his own greatness and importance.
