roots of 'holy grail'

released a year prior to "monty python's holy grail", was robert bresson's take on the arthurian romance "lancelot du lac." i saw this film for the first time only recently. it opens immediately to a scene of arthurian bloody gore much like the opening scenes from "monty python's holy grail." i started laughing, thinking this was a comedy, because i had seen the python movie many times before. well it isn't quite comedy, but a really beautiful retelling of the arthur, lancelot, and guinivere love triangle with amature actors reciting sparse dialogue in a minimalist setting. brillant.

Thanks for posting something on this unfortunately lifeless board. Yes, it certainly reminded me of the holy grail when I first saw it, but obviously it quickly veers away from monty python. It has a beauty almost beyond description, because it's not so much what is going on on-screen but also what the viewer brings to the film and as a result, it tends to resonate with me on a much deeper level than other films.

There are people, of course, for whom the stupid, sophomoric, crass and craven Ponty Python filth is not a reference.

They are unfortunate souls. Your signature line suits your post perfectly.

<sarcasm>Yes, because Monty Python reeks of cowardice</sarcasm>. Are you kidding me? Your post is about as sophomoric as it gets. Both of the mentioned movies are great, and you should do your armchair, pointless critiques elsewhere.

I immediately thought of Monty Python as well and as such simply couldn't take the movie seriously even though i've liked other Bresson films.

''There are people, of course, for whom the stupid, sophomoric, crass and craven Ponty Python filth is not a reference.''

You remind me of an irritating and deservedly hated elitist moron known as ''B'' who, whilst trying to appear intelligent, would show his stupidity by using words that he finds ''big'' inappropriately - putting the word ''déclassé'' before theft was an infamous example - just as you just have with your comment. Craven? You don't even know what that means, wee man.

''Snobbery is a form of romanticism, the chastity of the perfectionist''

Snobbery is simply an attempt to disguise inadequacies.

True. This film influenced the Monty Python group a lot. The blood and gore are the most obvious references, but a lot of the sound use in Holy Grail was also inspired from Lancelot du Lac
