what was Richard on?

I know he had back pain etc but he seems mummified in this...Im guessing he was wasted on booze and painkillers but still, shocking to see.......

"ah have always depended upon the strangeness of kindness..."

The infamous Klansman... He was on three bottles of vodka a day. Three bottles. After the filming ended the doctors told him that he had two weeks to live if he continued the drinking. He dried out. For a while.

It's absolutely true that Richard was drinking three bottles of Vodka a day while making this turkey. The amazing thing is that Lee Marvin matched him drink for drink, yet his performance is quite good. You'd never watch Marvin in the movie and think, "man, he's drunk." He seems perfectly sober. However, Burton is reeling in every single scene. Sometimes he can barely stand up and weaves when he walks, slurs his words and is hilariously BAD.

Richard had a contraption that helped him stand and not fall when he was totally bombed. He sort of stood in it and it was kept out of view of the cameras. Early in his career Collin Farrell gave an interview that he always wanted to be as big a drinking actor as Richard Burton and have a similar type object to keep him standing. LOL

Just to clarify, Burton was not on any prescription painkillers during production. It was pure Vodka. For anyone who wants to read some hilarious stories of Burton's drinking during The Klansman, get a copy of Jim Bacon's book, "Hollywood is a Four-Letter Town."

It is a shame how actors like Richard Burton and Robert Shaw etc have died from drinking as they were great actors Richard Burton had a tremendous voice

reply

I don't know what people find so amusing about someone drinking himself to death.

The delight people seem to take in Richard's alcoholism is pretty sad in my book. It's difficult to watch him in films like this because his condition distracts from his character.

The Germans have a word for it: schadenfreude. It means to take pleasure in other people's misery.

Its the engine that keeps social media going.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

reply

Indeed. The concept of schadenfreude seems to be stronger than ever these days when feelings that people once kept to themselves are now voiced to total strangers without repercussions.

What misery is Burton suffering from? The guy has been dead for over 30 years.

It's that man again!!

reply

Why in the hell was he even in this movie, with that absolutely lame, fake southern drawl?
