Spoilers

They were shuttled into a cart to go to a concentration camp. And, they probably decided to end it with the whole clouds bit so that the ending wouldn't be too depressing with the cast, or at least most of it, dying in the camp.

I'm watching the R. Williams version for the 2nd time and plan to see the original one but I'm puzzled by your last sentence.

"Anyone who still has faith in humanity has never been to the imdb boards."

I watch TV from 7am to 11pm 7 days a week. My DVR is my best friend and I feel lost when my laptop isn't available to look up things on IMDB. While I consider myself somewhat cynical, it's the movies and tv shows that give me hope for the future. As long as artists strive to find answers, laughter, joy; I must continue to have hope. I say this as a person who's house is in foreclosure, who can no longer afford insurance, and as a German born Jew of retirement age, it's all I CAN say except Scheisse. But then-they don't teach foreign languages anymore in this country. No funding. Lol. But if you'd care to explain-I'm all ears.

I know I'm typing this long after the question has been asked, but that's just my signature. Randomly decided to go back and look at all my old posts, and any discussion long after it.

Oh, and it's mainly because I read so many ridiculous things on IMDB. Whether it's basic stupidity, hate, extreme indifference to serious subject matter, and whatever else.

Exactly.
The only addition I'd like to put to this comment is that the movie cuts off directly after the girl's question so it's been left open whether Jakob tells her the 'correct' answer or not. I.e. destroys hope (which he's been stirring for all those months in others' minds) or not.
The movie started relatively lame imho but the ending has made watching it really worthwhile for me. Especially due to 'missing' cheesy background music.
