Fort Conger


In the movie, the airship's first Arctic stop is at Fort Conger. I found it on Google Earth just now and never knew it was a real place:

Just a couple of tiny houses. Looks nothing like the trading post setting as portrayed in the film.

Fort Conger was originally set up as a 'staging post' for arctic exploration/research and was probably too remote to be considered for trade as it isn't really en route for anywhere. I guess a little artistic licence was required so they could pick up their polar guide Oomiuk and make the 'airship journey' part of the story more interesting, but there aren't many permanently inhabited settlements this far north.
