It really is a masterpiece

I don't know if I should be surprised that nobody has commented over here. Then again,I hadn't seen this movie until today. I was hesitant over watching it- I didn't know if it would be my thing (because recently many of the movies I had been hoping to enjoy haven't really been my thing) but this one really was. Philippe Noiret's performance, and actually, all the acting, is enough of a reason to watch this movie.

It really is a masterpiece
Not in my book. Not by a long shot.

I just had a chance to watch it and I quite liked it. What I especially liked was the fact that the film was old - interesting to watch the 1970s France; had the same movie been made now, it might not have been that interesting. I must also add that I probably did not understand some of the social and political themes in the film.

it's a slow burn classic.

I'm not sure it's a masterpiece although as a directorial debut it's masterful. The photography is wonderful. I agree that Noiret elevates the film. He has such a fantastic face and brings so much to his character. The plot is simple but the narrative and its themes are not; I'd have to chew over what I saw before coming to conclusions about either.

It's a pity the film hasn't been seen more widely. It's readily available on dvd with subtitles.
