My #1 'bizzaro' is The Cabinet of Dr. Ramirez(1991). It caught me by surprise one night and I was completely transfixed. I'm going to watch The Holy Mountain tomorrow for the first time.

what did you think of it?

Don't take another step until you (the reader) has seen a film by Luis Bunuel. His later works are my favorites. please watch in any order;

-"THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY"
-"THE OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE" (they are both good films for Freudians)

Then watch these films below, they are ALL the best films in the world! (but not ALL of the best films in existence, just a choice few ;))

-"KAIDAN"

-"LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY"

-"INFERNO"

-"BETTY BLUE"

-"SAYAT NOVA"

-"THE LEGEND OF THE SURAM FORTRESS"

-"TERROR FIRMER"

-"THE BEYOND"

-"THE WILD BUNCH"

-"BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID"

-"THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING"

-"DON'T LOOK NOW"

-"EDUCATING RITA"

-"BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA"

-"BLUE VELVET"

-"TWELVE MONKEYS"

-"TENEBRE"

-"DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD"(the jeremy iron's one)

-"MUNICH"

-"BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW"(A MUST SEE!!!!!!)

-"SCHIZOPOLIS"

-"THE ELEPHANT MAN"

-"AMERICAN PSYCHO"

-"PRINCESS MONONOKE"

-"THE BIG LEBOWSKI"

-"TROMEO & JULIET"

-"THE PRESTIGE"

-"RAW MEAT"/ "DEATH LINE" (same film, different title)

-"LA PLANÉTE SAUVAGE"

-"DELIVERANCE"

-"NINJA TERMINATOR"

That's it, but if you like guilty pleasures;
-"KRULL"

Ha! When reading the opening post I thought of "Last year at Marienbad" or "L'année dernière a Marienbad" as it's originally titled as well. Great movie that is, if you ask me.

reply

Definitely check out that thread linked to above.

I'd also recommend some of Jan Švankmajer's stuff above anything. Just run a search for his name in You Tube and you'll see some of the best short movies ever made. When you're done with that, give Alice, Faust and Little Otik a watch too.

Like Jodorowsky, his movies are anarchic, offbeat and very, very funny!

reply

Yeah little otik!
alot of freud tho!
if you didn't know what oral fixation was before watching little otik, you will when you've seen it... bleugh!

reply

Alice is pretty good. Little Otik is beyond ridiculous.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

Also three of my faves. 2001 is easily my favorite movie.

Try:

Tideland
Lady Vengeance (not as surreal, but really, really beautiful in a sick way).
Metropolis

Take care!

reply

"in a sick way" - What's wrong with you? It IS a beautiful and great movie. If you have to make it bad because you can't accept it, please let it be and don't recommend it.

You are dumb.

Why the self-righteous over-reaction? Sick is not necessarily "degrading." I find Blue Velvet, Freaks and Night of the Living Dead to have a sick perspective, but I agree with many that they are masterpieces. Indeed, the whole genre of Grand Guignol is "sick." And many of us who work with illness and death often have a "sick" sense of humor. I worked in AIDS when it was still a death sentence and AIDS jokes were common. I've heard the same among the police, coroners, funeral home directors, etc. It's a form of catharsis, a way to release internal fears and stress. I certainly don't feel degraded if someone said I had a "sick sense of humor" (that is, of course, separate from the possibility that the targets of our jokes might feel degraded). I think you need to learn the definition of "degrading" before jumping on your ridiculous soapbox.

reply

but when you call it sick it is degrading, isn't it?

for me for example it's not sick, it's just a great drama; not the Hollywood-mainstream-like one.

You make sense: don't label a film sick without elaborating! we like to hear why it is sick and good, rather than JUST 'sick' because that leaves the mind with all sorts of connotations to deal with, and then the mind will end up picking one that will be nothing like what you intended the word 'sick' to mean, so say what you mean. everyone likes a man who is literate!

Im sure others have listed these, but try TIDELAND, Un Chein Andalou, SWEET MOVIE, maybe and I stress the "maybe" SALO, also VIDEODROME, and of course anything by Fernando Arrabal (spelling)who was very close with Jodorowsky.., there are countless surrealist works out there. However, for the most part Hollywood despises surrealism so dont expect them all to be too easy to snatch up at BLOCKBUSTER.

sweet movie is fantastic, as well as un chien andalou. last year at marienbad is great, but definitely check out any movies by director Guy Maddin. His movies are super surreal and dream like. definitely check out the saddest music in the world, careful, and my winnipeg, to name a few
