just a few random thoughts on Harry and Tonto

I always resisted watching this movie. When I finally did (Sat. night) I loved it. A few thoughts:

-Ellen Burstyn has never been more beautiful
-Chief Dan George and Arthur Hunnicut, as always, were wonderful
-Geraldine Fitzgerald is (or should be) Hollywood Royalty, and is great as Jessie
-Melanie Mayron, as others have noted was great support, as was Josh Mostel (in fact, it's not fair to single these actors out but leave others out, as the entire supporting cast was wonderful. Kudos to Larry Hagman, the Polish man who dies, and the family of Harry's older son, among others).
-Art Carney was subtle and touching, nothing approaching maudlin or cheap. He was a truly talented man.
-Mazursky and the writers and editors did a fabulous job not overdoing the sad scenes to milk the melodrama. Mazursky isn't a consistent filmmaker, but this is probably his masterpiece.
