Gun in bible?

I'm trying to figure out whether this is a movie I saw on TV (as a kid) that I know I really liked, but at this point I can't be sure of the title. My memory has always been that the star was Marjoe Gortner, and it probably would have been the first thing I ever saw that featured him. The only other detail that I still retain is a bit where the protagonist has a Bible with the inside pages hollowed out to hold a small handgun...so whenever he says "Let us pray", or something to that effect, you know some shoot-em-up is about to commence. Is this indeed that movie? Or have I confused it with something else?

I watched the movie last night, and there is no gun in a hollowed-out Bible. Defacing a Bible in that manner would have been considered pretty blasphemous for TV in 1974.

there is an early 70s western called 'Buck and the Preacher'--directed by and starring (as Buck) Sidney Poitier. Harry Belafonte co-starred as the Preacher, who had an oversize Bible in which he kept a pistol ('I put my faith the good book...'); Ruby Dee also co-stars--it's a pretty good movie.
