what poem?

close to the end of this (great) movie we hear burt lancaster quotes from a poem. it is about footsteps from the upper floor symbolising the coming death. can anybody tell me the title of this poem and more about it?

reply

I'd like to know too.

- Who is God ?
- When you close your eyes and make a wish, God is the one who doesn't care about.

reply

This is not a poem. The professor says: "There is a book I have on my bed-table and I keep re-reading from it.The story is about a tenant on the upper floor..."

reply

oh, thank you for this reply!
you may be right - and I hav it wrong in my memory...
but still, the question remains: what book is he talking about?
or is it just a sentence with no real book behind?

nice greetings
from tom
