What a Wierd Film!

I bought the DVD of A Conversation Piece at a dollar store. I guess you could call it an impulse purchase. I can say that I received value in kind and at least a modicum of entertainment. I was struck by the wierdness of the movie.

Why didn't the professor just tell them to get the &*^% out? I guess he was lonely. The lecherous nature of the film seemed gratuitous to me.

I forced myself to watch the entire film, hoping all the while for the plot to improve. It didn't.

There were brief moments in the film where sentimentality was given fair play and the characters seemed like real people from time to time. More consistency was needed. The film was predictable after the first 15 minutes. This has to be Burt Lancaster's worst film.

English over-dubbing was not well done and very annoying on my copy.

Hey, I'll watch almost anything once but this film tried my patience and nearly broke it.

Sorry to read you didn't like it. I saw it years ago at the cinema - in the Italian version - and thought it was very good. But we all have different tastes.

I liked the film, too. As for the dubbing, the film was shot in English with Lancaster and Mangano (probably Berger, too) post-synchronizing their performances in English. There are actually two English dubs of the film. The three lead voices are the same but the some of the supporting characters are re-dubbed with less-accented voices on the UK DVD's audio track (my older US tape release had the original dub).

What a great cast. I would love to watch this film again.

I think it makes a huge difference what version of the film you are watching. I remember first watching it years ago on a vhs tape, substandard looking and, it seemed to me, quite choppy (of course, I was much younger too and may not have grasped the film's meaning as well). But watching it a second time, in a much superior looking dvd version, I found it gripping and beautifully done. Perhaps that was due to more maturity on my part or a superior print, maybe both, who can say?

I think as we get older the film gets more and more relevant. I think Helmut Berger is a big problem. I didn't believe him for a minute.
