It always bothered me what happens to the bald sailor in the red/purple shirt. They're fighting the centaur and Sinbad and three of his guys are standing there ready to fight. The centaur charges at them and then it cuts to the next angle where the bald guy is lying dead on the floor.
it wasn't a 'gold thingy.' It was a chart. A nautical chart!
One of my favorite movies...I can't remember if I saw this before or after I saw Tom Baker as Doctor Who - but he's such a great villain. Also enjoyed John Philip Law's performance, and the fight with Kali was great.
I also "tracked" the two sailors who joined Sinbad and co. on the island...apparently they get killed by Kali because you never see them again after that scene! I know it's silly to think about these little details, but I think it's interesting that three sailors get killed and not only does no one grieve, they don't even notice it! And you just think about the actors playing them, acting like "Guy" in "Galaxy Quest," knowing it's just a matter of time until their character gets unceremoniously bumped off, by a monster.

Sometimes it's not enough merely to teach. One has to punish as well.
And bald Omar was supposed to be killed in a section of the centaur fight that was removed after the live-action was shot but before Harryhausen did the stop-motion. (This info comes from a number of Harryhausen books/articles I've read over the years -- in his Film Fantasy Scrapbook, Harryhausen says there was a swordfight that was "removed for overlength"; there are storyboards of this fight in Harryhausen: An Animated Life).
If you look carefully at the DVD, you'll notice one brief shot where Omar's lying dead on the ground. It's 4 shots after the centaur's POV angle showing Sinbad, Rashid, Haroun and Omar. The centaur charges left-to-right, then turns around to move right-to-left. In the first shot where it's moving right-to-left, dead Omar's legs can be seen sticking out from behind a rock on the left of the screen. Haroun even kicks Omar's foot while jumping across it.
I saw this has a kid in the theaters. It was a number of years before I had a chance to see it again on TV. I could have sworn I remembered seeing Omar get killed when the centaur initially charges them and was surprised that this wasn't clearly shown when I re-watched it.
Apparently, I was so into the movie as a 14-year-old that my subconscience simply inserted Omar's death scene for me.
