UK Widescreen R2 DVD Released.

For those of you who missed the newspaper freebie, a new Widescreen DVD of Gold was released in the UK, Region 2, by Slam Dunk Media a few weeks ago. Its in 2.35:1 (Anamorphically Enhanced), has a decent picture and 20 chapter stops. Sadly no extras except for a fairly useless 10 picture "image gallery", not even a trailer.

Here's the link to Amazon if you want to order it, or just see what this version looks like. The German one looks classier, with the original US poster on the cover, but is considerably more expensive to import, just for that. The UK one is £5.99 currently at Amazon, but seems pretty cheap everywhere - £5 should be easy to find.

BTW The same company has also just released Shout At The Devil, but it is still the short version, and apparently now fullscreen!

The quality of the freebie is superb compared to the ILC release. If Slam Dunk Media's edition is of the same quality it would be well worth the money for those interested in the film.

Is it definitely full 2.35:1 or is it the same 1.85:1 master used for the Daily Mail freebie?

I don't have the newspaper disc to compare but I had read it reported that it and the new sell through one are the same transfer. But that can't be the case, as the Slam Dunk purchase version is definitely 16:9 anamorphic, then letterboxed to (approx) 2.35:1, as is standard for that ratio. It definitely isn't 1.85:1.

I wouldn't say its a wonderful transfer, but its OK - I've seen a lot worse. Its a huge improvement over previous releases and is probably the best we are ever going to get - at least with this generation of technology.

Hope that clarifies it, but if I can offer any further info just let me know.

Thanks. The Daily Mail freebie was definitely 1.85:1, which was a pity as it was otherwise a good transfer of the uncut version.

Hi,

Did you ever get a copy of Gold? I managed to pick up a copy of the newspaper freebie just out of curiosity, and it IS anamorphic 2.35:1 (although the slpcase wrongly claims its 4:3). I'd hate to see you buying the sell-thru copy on my recommendation if you have the freebie, as, at a quick check, I'm pretty sure its the same transfer. They are certainly in the same screen format anyway, so I'd be astonished if they were different transfers.
