A 'Non-James Bond' Movie

Only saw this for the 1st time about 7 years ago & it really does have James Bond written all over much of it. I recall the opening credits being basically just like a Bond film & the title song plays out like a Bond film. ...& Roger Moore is in it. Still at the dawn of his tenure as 007.
So I would imagine audiences pretty much expected a "Bondian" character. And with a few minor differences, they got it.

As Roger Moore is my favorite Bond, I was in it for him, but for overall quality, it really is a step down. Not a terrible film, but a fairly forgettable one. Maybe it was the writing & the budget. Still, worth seeing for Roger fans though.

I agree with all your comments. I saw the movie in London back in 1976 and just watched the remastered DVD version a few days ago. They tried to get Tom Jones to sing the title song, but for some reason (possibly a limited budget) they got a sound alike and Don Black to write the lyrics. Overall, an OK film at best.
