Jack Palance

I have seen places on the Internet that list him in the cast. Is this true? If so, was his performance added on to the original movie in the same manner as Raymond Burr in "Godzilla?"

No blah, blah, blah!

Then I don't know how this mistake was made. Really weird.

reply

Yes very. I can't think of anything else to say, so i'll stop here.

Even stranger was that when this was first broadcast on Los Angeles television (1979 or 1980, I think) the TV Guide mentioned that Palance was in the cast. He's not though, making this even weirder!

reply

Even stranger was the fact that WOR-TV in NYC actually credited him in their promos. Weird indeed!

There are lots of little rumors about the Godzilla series, such as the dual endings for King Kong vs Godzilla, or the existence of a "Godzilla vs Gamera" movie and so on. Especially in the US, when Godzilla is viewed with cheap disdain, I'm sure the lazy reporters, reviewers and writers for TV guide and so on don't care or bother to try and research any such rumors, and will just repeat them and continue them.

I don't know how many little reviews or blurbs I've read over the years that describe the 1964 Mothra vs Godzilla as Godzilla defending Japan from a giant moth. While anyone who actually has seen the movie would know that is not an accurate description of the film at all, this underlines the kind of central laziness that media people in the US have long treated Godzilla with.

"Godzilla vs Mothra? Must be Godzilla fighting a big moth, right? Godzilla's the defender of Japan, right? Must be what the movie is about, no need to really see it then. And hey, if someone else said that Jack Palance is in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, then I'll just assume it's true. It's not like I'm actually going to sit there and watch the damn movie myself! I'm a busy guy! Ain't got time to be watching corny old monster movies!"

I agree, dark sword. Horror/sci-fi movies just don't get the respect they deserve, IMO.

This mistake was originally made back in the mid 1980's. They also listed Carol Lynley in the cast! Of course neither Lynley nor Palance appeared in the film.

reply

Palance and Lynley did do "The Shape of Things to Come" a loose remake of the 30s H.G. Wells adaptation...and for whatever reason they got credited with a Godzilla movie done on a budget that couldn't have afforded either of them.

reply

He is in the movie, every time one of the bad guys is killed he makes a brief appearance in black face makeup.
