Does anyone here NOT like this movie? Is it that bad?

I love this film. It's one of my all time favorites. The first one is better but this is still on the same teir.

I think most people love the scenes with a young Vito in Little Italy.

Actually the repeated young Vito flashbacks were my least favorite aspect of the movie. Not so much the scenes themselves as much as I felt that it negatively affected the pacing of the main storyline which I strongly preferred. It's part of the reason why I definitely prefer the original Goddfather & find it much easier to sit through repeat viewings. Although De Niro would go on to become one of the most accomplished & talented actors of his generation(& one of my personal favorites), I think his turn as the young Vito is without a doubt the most overrated performance of his career, that doesn't hold a candle to Marlon Brando's iconic interpretation of the character or Pacino's performance in the same film for that matter.

It's the kind of movie you would want to erase from your memory to rewatch it for the first time.

I ranked it second of all time behind Empire Strikes Back

I could see somebody not liking it from the scenes in Tahoe. Some of those scenes are dicey. Frank Pantangeli's whining and his complaints about the music.

I was irked when Michael said he could not meet with the senator alone because it would be an insult to these men.

The assassination attempt on Michael was rather lame in my opinion. What was that a suicide attack?

Over time the film gets better and I do love the Little Italy scenes with young Vito.

That scene is weird. Also, how did Fredo aid Roth/Ola in the hit attempt? I mean, did Fredo go into Michael's bedroom and leave the curtains open? If so, how does that reconcile with Fredo's explanation to Michael that he never knew it was a hit. Was Fredo lying?

reply

Why do you care?

reply

I think it's much weaker than the first film, but it's still a good movie

No one can tell you if the movie is "bad" to you. You may indeed hate it even if you enjoyed the first film. Personally, I think the vast majority of people who loved the first film would love the second.

I loved the first movie and love the sequel. I hate the third film and think it's just plain "bad".
