For different reasons I myself consider them both equal. I think they're both as good as each other and can't possibly split them for quality.
And I know that they're both considered classics by critics and fans alike, but what I've been hearing from people lately is that they definitely prefer the first one. That may be so, however do you think that Part II is just as good as Part I? Or do you find the first film to be superior?
This is probably the only case I can think of where the sequel measures up to the original film. Godfather II got several things right that many sequels (including GIII) fail at: being made shortly after the original, and continuity with respect to director/writer cast, plotline, and personality traits of the lead characters.

To ppl who don't love the NYC/DeNiro flashbacks, the Sicilian scenes from the first film align the same for me- more patient breaks in the action.

I prefer the original but I also don’t think they could have done any better with II. It’s the perfect sequel.
shareConcur. They are so equal there are versions where both films are spliced into one and as a viewer it's indistinguishable which is which movie.
sharenope, not even close. The first one is a masterpiece of moody filmmaking. The second one is an ambitious mess with a forced, silly resolution.
