How did Vito not know.

I've often wondered, whenever I watch Pt2, how did Vito not know who Fanucci was? If he grew up in the neighborhood, he must have known, yet it has to be explained to him. I get that it might have to be explained to the audience, but there must have been a different way to do it.

I suppose that neighborhood could have been new to him; perhaps he moved there after he got married.

When Abbandando fires him, he says something about him treating him like a father ever since he came here. They're not specific timewise, but it makes it sound like since he emigrated. Even if he didn't grow up in that particular neighborhood, it's my impression that in the Black Hand was in all the Italian immigrant neighborhoods.

Exposition for the audience. Just as when Tom tells his wife at the wedding scene in The Godfather, no Sicilian can refuse any request on his daughter's wedding day. I'm sure she was aware of that fact.
