Not as good as I remember

I saw this on a big screen showing last night, I enjoyed it and was surprised to find myself, and the audience, laughing at a couple of moments (pop goes the weasel, etc)

Anyhow i had not seen any of the Godfathers in about ten years, but had always had in my head that GF2 was by far the better movie, well actually I think I would take that back now.
The movie surprised me at how much it dragged and dragged, especially in Cuba, etc. I do love the DeNiro sections, and think the movie started very strongly, buy just kind of tapered off, but then had a decent ending.

I would now say that the GF movies are pretty much on a par, maybe GF 1 has the edge.

Good Post Geno. Truthfully I like both equally but the first one feel a bit more perfect probably because everyone was in it(minus Deniro). The biggest reason I like GF2 is because of the scenes of young Vito Corleone. I'm Italian and ive heard stories of my grandfather going through the same exact thing when he come over from Italy(minus becoming a mobster lol)

Haha, brilliant.

The first film is perfectly structured, but I don't think anything beats the parallel stories of father and son coming into their own in different generations. The second film's dual structure and parallel/contrasting themes leave a much bigger impact on me.

Television is a vice; film is an addiction.

I agree. The Nevada-Cuba stuff was good but nowhere near as engaging as anything in the first film in my opinion.

What I love most about GFII is the prequel DeNiro segments.

I prefer part two more and more as time passes.

It's a brilliantly crafted film and I understand why anyone would prefer it over the first. That said, some of the Michael scenes, particularly the Cuba parts, get tiring to watch with every viewing. The main reason I come back to this film more often than the first one, is because of the sublime young Vito sequences - sometimes for the stunning cinematography alone.

You probably got that idea from watching Scream 2 (1997) and/or were indirectly influenced by that movie via its cultural impact. My theory is: that scene in Scream 2 was a social experiment to see how many people they could dupe into thinking GF2 was better than the original. The year before Scream 2 was released, GF2 was #77 on IMDb's Top 250 list. In 2000 it was #7, and today it is #3.
