Is This Better Than the New Version?

James Caan STAYS with you in a way Marky Mark just doesn't.

Jimmy Caan is fabulous in this. Outstanding performance in a great film. I doubt Wahlberg comes close to his performance, although i have not seen the remake yet.

The original is leaps and bounds better than the remake
Just saw the Wahlberg remake last night. Was almost falling asleep

I remember seeing the original in 74 and liked it very much. Jawees Caan was great. Oddly enough,I stumbled upon it the other night. My first thought was "Awesome!", but that quickly changed. It had a bad case of the 70's - the fashion, the really bad score, the close up of the radio he was listening to (basketball game). So I think it deserved a remake, although I've heard that the Wahlberg version is weak. Too bad.

What? Why do you need a remake simply because you feel this film looks a bit dated? That would mean all old films need to be re-made simply because of the time period they represent. In fact, MOST FILMS don't need a remake at all and should be left alone because most of the time, the rehash is never as good as the original. That's my take on it anyway...and the things that you found 'bad', I would find great. I love films made in particular time periods and some of the films that came out in the 70's were great. It was the last great decade for the auteurs and the American film industry has never been the same since.

tigerbos, you just said perfectly how I feel about remakes and especially this, "I love films made in particular time periods and some of the films that came out in the 70's were great. It was the last great decade for the auteurs and the American film industry has never been the same since". Thank you.

You are welcome! I'm glad I'm not alone with my opinion on this topic!

You're def not alone. Movies were light years better in the 70s. I like the gaudy fashion, ridiculous decor, bad a$$ music, real people and real acting, AND lack of CGI.

I treasure my DVDs, esp my 70s movies (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Silver Streak, Taxi Driver, The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3, Two Lane Blacktop, Vanishing Point, Apocalypse Now, Paper Chase, and
many more).

I've never seen the original 'The Gambler' but did see the remake on Hulu tonight. I thought it was pretty good, and MW did a great job bwing that character. Now I'm gonna track down the original.

I just recently saw the original version on Netflix and loved it and was wondering the same thing.

I haven't seen the remake, but I suspect this one is probably better.

Just saw the remake, pathetic on all counts. A horrendous stinker.

Never saw the remake and don't plan to. This film was good and could have been better in a few areas but Caan was probably at his absolute best here.

I haven't seen the remake, but I would imagine this one is better.
