Comparison to the previous version 'Front page' and the other versions

The Front Page(1931)
His Girl Friday(1940)
The Front Page(1974)
Switching Channels(1988)

This is one of the most famous remake group in history: each one of those films (except maybe for the last one 'Switching Channels') are movie classics. They are all based on the 1920's Broadway hit 'The Front Page' about the successful news reporter.

His Girl Friday, is the one to watch...Rosiland Russell ( Jack Lemon ) was a real match for Cary Grant ( Walter Mattheau )...BTW, I do not recall the David Wayne character in that one...maybe it was more subtle portraying a 'gay journalist'...Boy, did he ever hammed it up.

Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday is by far the best version of the original play. One of the greatest comedies of all time. The direction, performances and pacing are unsurpassed.

The Front Page (1974) is by far the worst. It just falls flat. There's none of that crisp sense of timing that was so evident in HGF. Which is especially disappointing because Billy Wilder is one of my favorite directors of all time.
