Question
How long is the uncut version? Can anyone check this for me? Thanks a million!
shareAround 95 minutes, at 24 frames per second (standard projection speed). PAL format releases (Europe and Australia) will run 92 minutes approx, as the transfer is done at 25 fps. Hope this is useful.
shareI'm in the US, I've got the 1992 Triboro VHS release. It says it's 96 minutes, so it must be the uncut version. But it also says it's rated R... Did they just re-rate it? Anyway, thanks a million!
shareThe 'R' rated version is heavily cut. I don't think the movie was restored until Criterion released it on laserdisc in the mid-1990s. The cuts are easy to spot.
SPOILER ALERT
When the male creature rips open his stitches at the end, you see his hands tear open his torso and the entrails fall out. In the 'R' version, the film abruptly cuts away and nothing is seen until the creature collapses on the floor in discreet long shot. All the gory set-pieces are similarly edited, leaving very little actual gore on screen.
That's too bad... I really have to get the DVD.
On my VHS, you see the sissors just start to slice through Sacha's throat, then it cuts to Kier holding up the severed head... I was expecting much more than this, and kept wondering why everyone said it was so over-the-top, but this explains it.
Was any of the sex/nudity cut in the R-rated version? I'm just curious.
Thanks for your help!
I haven't seen the R-rated version for years. As I recall, the sex and nudity were largely intact. Even the infamous necrophilia scene with Udo Kier and Dalila Di Lazzaro seemed to escape unscathed. I guess the MPAA were more concerned with the outrageous gore scenes.
shareThe Amazon version is labeled as Rated X and 96 mins; I just looked it up. Of course, Amazon has made a mistake or two in the past.
