EXQUISITE TRASH

i was very disturbed to discover that no one has devoted a message to this campy tash classic -- so i thought someone should start it

i personally find FFF brilliant and would be glad to discuss it with anyone who is equally twisted...

"can't you stop saying F*CK all the time?" elvira, scarface

reply

i just got the criterion collection dvd,it's great.i saw it in a theatre in the late 70's,as a re-release,unfortunately it was no longer presented in 3-D format.i also like blood for dracula.

reply

I took my girlfriend to see this spectacle when it first opened in Washington DC, rated "X" and in glorious 3-D !! Unforgettable!

When the guts drip through the grate onto the audience ... when those ridiculous jaws come straight at you before they cut off the man's head ... and the spear scene at the end -- that piece of liver, or whatever it is,dangles right in your face. Camp, and glorious.

I thoroughly enjoy the *beep* the gallbladder scene," too, of course.

And others aer right -- if you don't get the uncut original, don't bother. And if you don't get the full-frontal male & female nudity, you got one of the hacked-up versions, not the real one.

I had truly hoped for a sequel, with those two wonderful kids carrying on their uncle-father's work, but alas ... it was not to be.

reply

Agreed on all counts. My dad took me to see this movie at the theatre when I was nine years old (In 3D)......and the experience, shall we say, shaped my sense of humour....I loved it then and love it now. Be careful when buying this movie as there are edited versions floating about, and as such they are absofuckinglutely USELESS.

reply

I'm glad there are other twisted souls out there who hold a special place for this masterpiece... I have the Criterion print, though clean, I really wish they would have provided 3-D format on the disc...

"Leave the Serbian to me!"- Udo Kier in Andy Warhol's Flesh for Frankenstein

reply

I loved Kier's portrayal of Dr. Frankenstein as an Incestuous Necrophiliac!

Yes, this flick was *awesome* in 3-D!!! Grisly, viceral, raw, I loved it. I don't think a more disturbed and disgusting film was made in the 70's. Wonderfully comedic ultra-violence!

Thing is, this was the Polarized 3-D, not the red/blue 3-D. Have *any* of those polarized 70's 3-D flicks been rereleased for video/DVD? Friday the 13th Part III? Amnityville 3-D? Rottweiler? I recall there was an Alan Quartermain flick, too...

reply

I think this is probably the worst movie I have ever seen.
I saw it in its first run in 3D.
I wasn't scared, or shocked, or amused. I was bored.
To call the production and acting amateurish would be high praise.

reply

But you see, Soujurn, that's the beauty of it. It's such total, utter crap that it's absolutely *wonderful*. Perfect example of cinematic sludge. So "EXQUISITE TRASH" just about sums it up. Anyone here seen "Blood-sucking Nazi Zombies"? Tell me I'm not alone...

your trash

reply

Yes, it's our trash. What's your point?

reply

Did we see the same film? "Flesh For Frankenstein" is one of the most visually beautiful films ever made. Have you seen this thing in it's original widescreen format? It resembles Bunuel at his most prolific. Comparing "Flesh For Frankenstein" to some sludge like "Blood Sucking Zombies" is like comparing "Belle De Jour" to "Porky's." It's probably the finest, and most unforgettable filmed version of the Frankenstein legend after "Bride of Frankenstein." It remains possibly,, my favorite horror film of all time, perhaps even above Dario Argento's "Suspiria." I am sometimes shocked by some of the comments I read on this site.

"IMdB; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...'

reply

If you think THIS is "the worst movie you have ever seen" then you have absolutely no taste/understanding of cinema. I can imagine what commercial sludge you must admire..

"IMdB; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...'

reply

I can think of a few that are worse. "Green Slime" is one. "Invasion of the Saucer Men" is another. And of course "Plan 9 from Outer Space" is another bad movie, though it has its appeal in other ways (such as being Bela Lugosi's last movie as he died during filming). Of course how bad a movie is and if it is bad or not is also often a matter of individual tastes. Some movies (like Disney's Fantasia) don't do well when they come out but later they develop a following.

Hello-

Polarized 3-D movies are becoming available from a variety of sources, but they are released as field sequential dvds. I got my set from www.razor3donline.com along with several IMAX movies, and some 1950s-1970s sci-fi. I also found a source on eBay that has Flesh for Frankenstein, Dial M for Murder, Jaws 3-D, Gog, Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space, etc.

I am a 3-D enthusiast and I have some reservations about field sequential systems. There is a noticeable flicker in the home systems (not so at IMAX), but other than that, the effect is excellent. You can get a whole system up and running, with a fistful of films for under $100. Money well spent IMHO.

Enjoy!

dr. von frankenstein's wife was hot.

reply

*LMAO* Oh my god! Your dad took you to see this when you were NINE?? Too friggin' funny! I wonder if it freaked him out when he discovered just EXACTLY what he was exposing you to at that young age... Heh heh heh heh...

When I was nine, my big scares were from Vincent Price/Roger Corman films and really bad "B" movies - "Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster," "Monster Beach Party," etc... Of course, "I" was nine in 1967, so things were a bit different... I guess. ;-)

reply

No- it didn't freak him out......

He took me to see deliverance when I was seven.

I haven't talked to that sick *beep* in years.

So excellant, what was that line?
"To know life one must *beep* death in the gall bladder."
I gotta find the DVD!

I saw this in 3D (un-cut) right after it came out, laughed my butt off.

A man's got to know his limitations.

reply

I'm personally so geeky-sick I own the Criterion versions of this and Blood for Dracula, plus the OOP soundtrack of both films (on one disc). I personally love both movies, and I love the music from them too.

I don't want some renegade necrophile princess as MY roommate!

reply

I've loved both FFF and BFD since I first saw them. Saw both in the un-cut versions twice soon after they were released, then once each in the R rated versions a few years later. The R rated versions were horrible (why to do that to such great movies?). Anyhow I've been wanting these for a long time but could never quite "pull the trigger" on a $200 purchase for two DVD's.

Well I got the itch again and went to Amazon.

I looked through the "20 new & used" and (as usual) found the out-of-print Criterion DVD's "new" for around $100 each. Then I saw a new release by Image Entertainment scheduled for Sept. 20 at $14.99 each. The run times match the Criterion versions and they are listed as NC-17 (FFF) and "not rated" (BFD). I promptly pre-ordered both, can't wait.

Actually, the line is "To know death, Otto, you have to *beep* life in the gall bladder."

...speaking of polarized 3-D, lets not forget Jaws 3-D and Metalstorm:The Destruction of Jared Syn in 3-D as well. I saw both as a teen in the 80's. Awfully bad flicks that were actually kind of fun.

reply

I saw Flesh For Frankenstein just yesterday and I loved it. However, I can understand why a lot of people would hate it, particularly those who don't know what to expect.

I think that in order to be properly enjoy this film, one should ideally:
1. Be a fan of trashy and/or horror movies (the store I rented it from was even called 'Trash Video', reportedly named after another Warhol/Morrissey 'collaboration').
2. Don't expect it to be remotely scary.
2. Know a little bit about the film's background.
3. See it with at least one like-minded friend who can laugh, cheer and jeer along with you.

- That's it, Ben. Stupid her into submission! -

reply

It's simply a matter of taste and sense of humor. Knowing about Warhol or any background isn't going to change that. Some people will just shake their heads and roll their eyes at how bad it is. Others will appreciate the brilliance of its audaciousness.

For me, it's so bad it's good. In fact it's so bad it's utterly brilliant and one of my faves to watch when I'm in need of a good laugh.

How great is Udo's death scene? It's seems like he's dying for ages and all the while spewing forth more and more slaughtered English. How could you not love a man who gives his all to such crap?

So many great quotes. Such terrible acting by Joe (but what a cute butt he has).

I feel lucky that I was able to get the Criterion DVD for $10 at a local video store that was closing.

reply

Perhaps this has been addressed in previous threads but....

I used to see this every year on cable around Halloween as a kid and of course it was heavily edited. Therefore, when I reached adult age I went out and rented it on VhS as soon as I could. However, I was disappointed to find that even the "R" rated VHS copy seemed to be edited as well. It looked as if a lot of the scenes involving sex and violence were cut in the VHS copy, I mean how bad could it have been? The camera seems to pan up when someone is getting stabbed but you still hear guts spewing and flesh being ripped open. Whatever. I was just hoping to see the director's original vision of what was filmed.

reply

Wow I can't imagine seeing this on TV. Except maybe on Mystery Science Theater.

The only difference I noticed between the VHS that I rented and the dvd I purchased is that you can see Joe's um, manhood.

reply

It was showen on Film4 6th Jan 2007 uk and... in 3D!!

My god, what a humble load of crap lol:)

reply

I'm just watching it on Film4+1 now! How would I get the 3D to work? Please forgive the ignorance!

-"There's no such thing as trolls."
-"Then how do you explain all the dead unicorns?"

reply

I just watched this film and... THERE WAS 3D?!?!?!?!?!?

reply

SheBear's summed it up exactly - so bad it's utterly brilliant.

Udo helplessly trying to stick his severed hand back on its stump just by pushing them together - when we have spent the entire film watching him sow entire carcases back together - almost split my sides. Superb.

Just a painted face on a trip down suicide row

reply

Yes, she has. Now, if I only had a friend to watch this with!

It's brilliant in its audaciousness.

reply

I don't recall the year though it had to be the late 70's or early 80's but it was on TV once that I recall here in the midwest. I imagine it was one of the cut versions (though I can't recall enough to be sure).

reply

Indeed

its a classic imo

I saw this at a theatre when it came out.
The most impressive part was the 3D effects where the bats were flying around.
I was literally "batting" them away.
