Better than The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (IMO)

Anyone else agree?

Agreed.

reply

I agree. I think both are masterpieces but this one is slightly better.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, although I found both very funny and revealing. The first Luis Bunuel film I watched was The Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeoisie too - been hooked since then, so even though I prefer this over that, I still admire that film so much for revealing a director to me that I was previously unaware of. :)

reply

Nope!
"Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie" is one of my favourite films, and contains one of my favourite scenes: the dream in which the soldier meets his mother...

Certainly one of the best--if not my favorite--from Bunuel's oeuvre. I agree (although "The Discreet Charm" is a masterpiece).

While I think most of his output from his collaboration with Carriere is excellent (Discreet Charm being the strongest) and Viridiana and Chien Andalou are his true masterpieces, it's The Phantom of Liberty that I enjoy watching the most - by far. Go figure.

reply

I sincerely hope I enjoy The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie more, because I did not like this.

My rating: 6

I only give it this high of a rating because of its obvious unique qualities. It puzzled me, but I don't care to think about the puzzle. The lackluster directorial effort reminded me of Woody Allen, as did some of the jokes (especially the eating/defecating reversal). Boring acting. Boring story. I guess I am being a little harsh, but I don't see how anyone could consider this a masterpiece. My biggest letdown so far. I probably won't forget it though.

reply

I completely agree with you.

I think you could definitely claim that Phantom's funnier than Discreet Charm — some of the set-ups are absolutely outstanding, and I think it makes me laugh out loud more frequently — but I feel that the latter is still the better film in many ways. While The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is a really effective political satire and near-perfect surrealist comedy, The Phantom of Liberty, to some extent, feels more like a collection of disjointed skits. Which is great, but somehow less satisfying at the end of the day.

Don't get me wrong, though: they're both masterpieces.

I wrote this comment 4 years ago and I have not seen the films since then. I remember most of The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie but very little from The Phantom of Liberty, so you might be right there :)

In my opinion, both are just as good. Even though they have a similar surrealistic tone and style, the humor and execution of the two are so unique from each other that it's hard to compare them. I would give them both 3.5 out of 4 stars, or 8 out of 10.

Yes. Discreet Charm seemed somewhat more crude and broad with its approach to satire and it didn´t flow quite as seamlessly. I also like Phantom´s structure better, the way its vignettes are sown together, just picking up another thread and shamelessly diverting elsewhere every once in a while (one can certainly see where stuff like Linklater´s Slacker is coming from, purposefully or not). Quite a breezy rendezvouz, this thing, even if some of the grotesquery it revels in occasionally appears to be laid on too thick, with a much too heavy hand which, of course, was a constant nuisance to Bunuel throughout his entire career. But that´s the way he was - ever the provocateur; how does this saying about old dogs and new tricks go, again... 7,5/10 kinda film overall.
