criterion edition

it appears the criterion collection will be releasing this buñuel film in may on dvd. i had hoped for a criterion of un chien andalou, but then kino released it. i guess this will have to suffice

reply

Yea, I had always hoped for Criterion to release Un Chien Andalou, and I really don't understand why they haven't - I'm fairly certain it is a public domain film. It would have also made a perfect addition to the Kino 'L'age D'or' DVD, but they neglected it there also. The only thing I can think of is that the prints are so bad that nobody wanted to take the time to clean them up just for a DVD extra, and Facets will release anything. But hopefully now that Criterion isn't wrestling to release that, we can hurry up and get some more Bunuel quick *Viridiana and Tristana PLEASE*.

reply

I'm happy. Finnally a DVD. There is a God.

The only important Bunuel film not availabale in DVD is "La Voie Lactée". Tristina is availbale on the British film Institute in an acceptable transfer Region 2 PAL .
"Viridiana" seems to be available from France, also PAL, but region none (or zero).
Criterion should release those 3 movies in pristine versions.

Criterion should release: Los Olvidados, El Angel Exterminador, Viridiana, Belle de Jour, Tristana, Nazarin. I consistantly send them emails requesting Bunuel films. It'd be nice to see Criterion release Viridiana as a 2-DVD and include Simon del Desierto on Disc 2, since it's not a full-length feature film.

I think that silent films got a lot more things right than talkies. --Stanley Kubrick

I agree with everything you just said!

*beep* criterion should do more extras for the next bunuelean movie. this one was awesome but the introduction was not enough. i hope they release "los olvidados" that would be great

reply

Not that this has any relevance to what anyone has said (except that it refers to the Criterion Collection), but I'm looking to buy this film on DVD and the stock photos show pretty much the same covers, but some show a black background and some show the white. Which one of these are NTSC Region 1?

The facts. The fiction.

reply

Black background is region 1.

Agree with the poster who said that Criterion should release some of the best films by Buñuel such as Los olvidados, El ángel exterminador, Tristana, Ensayo de un crimen, Simón del desierto, Nazarín, etc.

I own a couple of them on DVD region 4 but they lack the quality presentation typical from Criterion.

Looks like they're a lilttle busy with their Adam Sandler classics collection at the moment :(
