anti-bildungroman or entwicklungsroman

to understand the nature of this, especially in relation to the tradition of german literature and as a comment on modern german sensibilities and view of the world, watch wim wenders commentary on the dvd. the idea of entering the world in the form of a journey to gain experience and develop character, the essence of the bildungsroman, no longer exists in the modern world according to the film. the world has changed. conceptually, this film is marvelous. as a modern maerican viewer of film, one may consider this film not worth th time to watch it, but what exists beneath the surface, in long-since lost tradtions of storytelling, is where this film is most important, and especially as an example of the picaresque journey (to where?).

I agree with you. And I also took it, the POV of the movie, as a result of being part of a culture that's post war in Germany.

Where any sort of external ideal would be, rightfully, shunned upon, or looked upon, at least, skeptically, as that lead to massive death and calamity. It's hard to grow when there isn't anything to grow to, hard to have a discussion when any and all sort of cultural markers aren't around.

As the whole cultural landscape was barren, the people reticent, wary, and sort of emotionally withdrawn from having to deal with the aftermath of WWII and for that matter WWI. Massive death.

The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig spoke of the time before, when culture was aware, before the horror of war in Europe. Great book.
