Or anyway, what were they smoking in the scene toward the end. Did Mario take her to an opium den? My guess is it was opium, but never having been a recreational drug user, I don't really know. Can anybody clue me in? Was what they were smoking supposed to be a sexual enhancer or something?

I've read the book. Yep. It's an opium den. And yep, it was supposed to enhance her sexually. In the book there is another character called Quentin who was in the opium den with them, but he has been written out of the film.
