Does anyone else think this deserves an R rating--the uncut version?

I just saw it on DVD (uncut). The film is beautifully shot but dull and the sex isn't even that explicit! There's no male frontal nudity at all and most of the sex happens off screen. Maybe in the 1970s this was shocking but it's pretty tame today. I'm surprised it still has an X rating--it should be R. Anybody agree with me?

I dunno, she does end up being raped (and psychologically 'broken in' and her innocence robbed) by two kickboxers at the end. With a gleeful looking sadistic old guy watching. That should really be considered slightly disturbing because up to that point she was a confident and well-balanced woman in the movie, and afterwards became more bestial. I'm not sure that a movie producer today would dare to show a woman being 'improved' by a violent double rape. In many ways society is less open-minded now than in the 70s and simply doesn't tolerate certain ideas.

Are u sure this is in the original and not one of the MANY sequels? Also, in the original, she is taught by an older man on how to better at sex (or something--I had trouble staying awake). I do remember there was NO hardcore sex at all in the movie. Her lesbian encounter LOOKED hardcore but it was more sensual than anything else. I seriously do not remember an rape scene. Anyways the MPAA rates moviers more for what they show than theme. You're right though--society IS more close-minded today about sex than in the 70s. "Emmnauelle" would definetely not be made today.

Yes I remember it clearly. It's the original movie - the first one. That same old guy takes her after smoking some opium to watch a Thai boxing match. She watches it and says she doesn't like it - too visceral, too barbaric. Then he whispers in the ear of the fight organiser that this woman is to be the prize of the fighter who wins. The announcer announces it in Thai and she doesn't understand. At the end of the fight she is held down by some guys and they rape her. She screams and fights to no avail. The screen fades to dark. When the light comes on the old man lectures her, she's different. The final scene has her back at the Thai boxing ring, screaming and egging the fighters on, 'liberated' in her new-found lustfulness for the winner. The movie then ends.

To be honest I remember none of it but it was a while ago. All I remember was how sensual, erotic and boring the film was! What surprised me was how tame it was. Sure--there's plenty of nudity (all female) but all the sex was all soft core. I'm not alone in noticing this--I saw it with a bunch of guys and they agreed. I'm sure the rape scene is troubling but that's not enough to give the film an X rating. If something like "Basic Instinct" can get an R rating than this sure could. Then again I thought "Showgirls" deserved an R rating too and that had an absolutely horrific rape in it. There is a cut version of that with an R rating...and the rape is left intact. They just cut out some nudity.

Wow, what cut did you see? those scenes you described are in the film, but in different sequence. She does get gang raped in the opium den, but later when she is the "prize" for the winning Thai boxer, she lets him have sex with her with no resistance. The film ends with her in a 3 way with the old guy and a younger Thai man in Mario's home.

In the one I saw she was raped by 2 Thai boxers first. She is upset and distressed and embarrassed. This is what 'loosens her up' and sort of liberates her, as in later scenes, where she willingly gets boned by a winning Thai boxer, after cheering on the boxers in the ring.

In the first, and really only "rape" scene, the two Thai men were not boxers. She gets raped in an opium den by guys who are just smoking opium. The following scene takes place during a boxing match, in another location. The scenes are unrelated.

I may need to watch it again to refresh my memory. What we can agree on is that Emmanuelle is raped, and then, after that incident, engages in consensual sex in a separate incident.
