Sorry you hated it, great film, loved the story. I guess you gotta be from NY to appreciate it. Sh#t, I remember the "OLE MILL", but it wasn't weapons, just fists.

You don't have to be from NY to appreciate Education of Sonny Carson. Maybe you just have to be over 50 -- because too many of us lived similar lives "back in the day." The film is gritty and often too real -- like what happened to Virginia. Sorry that Sonny, and his son, are dead. At least Sonny's story lives on.

i am from the same hood as sonny carson. and this was the truth.BedStuy was just like it was depicted in the movie. the leader of the Tomahawks was in the movie. but the gang name they changed it. i used to date one of the tomahawks back in the day. and the girls u saw were in the gang too. sonny carson was a hero in our hood back then he fought for our civil rights back then.RIP SONNY CARSON.

I dont know where you're from or who you are but, to appreciate a movie like this i'd argue you'd first of all have to appreciate the blaxploitation genre and the time in which it was made. I just watched this and Spook who sat by the door back-to-back yesterday, both for the first time... WOW. Although Sonny Carson was made in the 70's which tempts you compare it to the blaxploitation genre, I wouldn't call it a 'down and out' blaxploitation flick due to the depth, originality, emotion and strength of story line.

However, an apprection for the genre in general helps in accepting the acting, lingo and over exaggerations commonly associated with the genre e.g. if your gonna watch a old skool kung fu flick, you cant trash it because someone's avenging the death of his master or the bad guy gets killed by an unlikely candidate due to intense honing of his style/skill!!
If you can work with these 'hitch's', there is nothing left but an engrossing, very moving flick that will have you transfixed til the end.
I'm a black man from london and i draw similarities with many of the 'coming of age' issues highlighted in the flick... had me f'ed up inside.

BOTTOM LINE, even if u didn't give this a 10, i dont see how anyone can truely justify calling the flick "RUBBISH". If you had an apreciation for black cinema in general, this wouldn't be your standpoint.

Huh, who would of thought an American 1970s Blaxploitation film wouldn't appeal to an upper class English woman?
