If you were to watch it from the basement rescue, and on ...

It's actually a pretty compelling story. You see the gist of the relationships and the conflict involved and then to see how it is all resolved in those 10 to 15 minutes. And mostly without dialog. If the beginning of the film lived up to that ending, would have been pretty epic.

If only these relationship scenes didn`t look as if they were lifted from some average daytime soap opera... In The Towering Inferno, from the same year, this stuff was handled better.

How do you depict a relationship that can't be compared to a day time soap opera, or night time for that matter?

reply

Better. With better writing. Better acting wouldn`t hurt, either.

Better, okay that is really specific. Considering this is a disaster film I think the relationship of Heston, Gardiner and Bujold was handled with restrain without going into too much over dramatic antics you find in soap operas. You cited The Towering Inferno as an example for relationships. If you mean the male characters and their interactions, I will agree with you there. But the male female pairings was hardly given any consideration. Though much of this was lost in the editing process.

Obviously, no one`s expecting a Bergman`esque psychodrama from a film like this, but nevertheless the characters could have used more nuance and the dialogue more spark (well, this squeaky-voiced body building aficionado was given a few amusing things to say). The human drama element does indeed come across more authentic in The Towering Inferno. Overall, Earthquake`s still a rather entertaining little number though, if somewhat unevenly paced.

With my original post, I only cared for the last 15 or so minutes. Seen far worse films.

I thought it was ironic that Gardner and Bujold were trapped in the same building. When it was first released I wondered why they had no contact with each other; but over the years feel as though that was best. If they had it would have been even more soap operatic.

The mistress knew the wife was there, I don't think Remy was aware she was though. Until that reveal at the end.

"The Towering Inferno" is like a soap opera - on fire.
