When did nurses stop wearing those funny hats?

At least one of the nurses in the film was wearing the old nurse's uniform: all white with a funny little white hat.
When did nurses stop dressing like that?

Mmmm good question...I think by the end of the1970's. You can still see some nurses wearing those hats in Dressed To Kill (1980)

reply

Yeah, that is a good question.

I vaguely recall when my dad was in the hospital in 1980; I saw them.

reply

Late 70's mid 80's they stopped wearing them

I was thinking the same thing. Jill wore one so did Mrs. Alves. I think Janet did too.

I was in the hospital in 1979 (as a newley diganosed Diabetic) it seems to me that at least one of the nurses who took care of me didn't wear a cap

reply

The use of nurses' caps in the medical facilities of the United States (as well as many other nations) all but disappeared by the late 1980s with the near universal adoption of "scrubs."

Worked in a hospital from '87-'91 & only the nursing supervisors wore the traditional uniform (& funny hats). All the other nurses wore scrubs.

Thus devastating the Nurse a Funny Hat industry.

The nurse hat design differed depending on what nursing school the nurse attended. They stopped wearing them in the eighties and early nineties. One of my friends is a registered nurse. She graduated in 1990 with her nursing degree. At that time the white nurse outfit with the hat had basically ceased to be mandatory wear, but for the graduation photo the nurses wore the traditional white outfit with their hat. The graduating nurses were still presented with the hat upon graduation. I've been told that now most of the nursing colleges no longer present the graudates with the hat, but I can't confirm that. Scrubs were more practical and more comfortable.
