Some film Manchester location info.

At the beginning of the film the "Modern Antique Shop" that he leaves is right at the northern end of Deansgate, just below Victoria Station and on the same side.

He then sets off down Deansgate towards the city centre.

There are several more scenes inter cut at this point including Portland Street (Where he turns right to go behind Piccadily Plaza).

A shot of the Buses in Piccadily and the Entrance to the old Under Ground Market on Market Street (Where Boots now Stands)

He goes down a pre-pedestrianised Market Street past Lewis's (now Primark)

The girl who takes off her coat and runs naked across the road, disrobes on the steps of Manchester Cathedral. (Never quite understood that bit?)

Then he is seen driving back up Deansgate from the far end. There is a very clear shot of him coming out from under a long gone bridge where the Bauer Millet showrooms now are with what is now Atlas Bar in the background and he goes over the lights at the junction with Liverpool Road.

Next shot shows him going around the roundabout next to the Trafford Road swingbridge.

I know this is getting incredibly anal, but there are so many postings asking whether this is filmed in England.

Thought it needed clearing up.

I saw a version of this film a few years ago. I remember the shot near the start of the motorbike going under the bridge that leads to G-Mex metro station.

Is the antique shop still there? I was unable to recognise many other locations when I saw it. The picture quality wasn't that great.

I imagine many of the locations were shot without permission although I'm not sure if film-makers had to ask permission in the same way back then.

I remember John Frankenheimer saying on his DVD commentary for French Connection II that he used a hidden camera quite a bit.

Ammunsingly, because of George's dubbed Cockney accent, a lot of reviewers think the opening scene is in London

God bless you!

Never mind 'anal', this movie is pure joy. I think there should be tour-buses recreating the journey taken by George and Edna! Now to find the filling station where they meet the Downs' Syndrome girl and her Oirish mother...

I think that the filling station is on the A65 going North towards the Lake District.
Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong.........
